2013 NFL Draft: Florida State DE Bjoern Werner headed to the NFL

A native of Berlin, Germany, Bjoern Werner only played football for two years in high school as an exchange student in American before being inundated with scholarship offers.

Werner accepted an offer to play at Florida State, and his emergence as a defensive superstar helped lead a revival of the Seminoles’ defense. With one of the strongest defensive fronts in the nation in 2012, the program won its first ACC title since 2005 and its first BCS bowl game in 12 years.

Now, only three years into his time with the Noles, the ‘Germanator’, as his teammates call him, is leaving school and heading into the NFL Draft.

Most young men play football their entire lives, dreaming of the day their name is called by the commissioner of the NFL on Draft Day.

Not Werner. The 6-foot-4, 255-pounder has the prototypical dimensions of a superstar, but it is his intense motor and his will to dominate each and every down that have actually made him into, yes, a superstar.

Again, only a few years after putting on a helmet and shoulder pads for the very first time, Werner finished second in the entire nation with 13.0 sacks. He also piled up 18.0 tackles for a loss, deflected a silly eight pass attempts at the line of scrimmage, tallied five quarterback hurries and caused a fumble.

While he has not spent decades dreaming of being taken in the first round, that is exactly what is expected for Werner come Draft Day. He is the eighth-highest rated player coming out of college and should be a top 10-overall selection.
