Orange Bowl representative tells NIU “we don’t want you here” prior to game
Kirk Herbstreit was the first to voice his displeasure on Northern Illinois making a BCS bowl game, but he wasn’t the last. According to Bruce Feldman of CBS Sports, one of the Orange Bowl’s representatives had some unkind words for the Huskies prior to the New Year’s Day game.
“You guys [NIU] don’t even deserve to be here,” the Orange Bowl rep said to the NIU staffer. “We didn’t even want you here.”
Feldman went on to describe the exchange via his source:
According to a source, the exchange took place the other night in a hospitality suite. The Orange Bowl rep had compared NIU to Duke. The NIU rep responded by pointing out that the Huskies, who are riding a 12-game winning streak, have been to bowl games in five consecutive seasons. The conversation escalated from there, the source says.
The Orange Bowl, also known as the ‘red headed step child’ of the BCS, has been begging for a big game over the past few years. Apparently, that frustration boiled to a point of this very classy move by one of the committee’s representatives.
Keep it classy.
