Skip Holtz firing fall out: Top QB de-commits from South Florida

What was once seen as one of the nation’s top up-and-coming programs is falling ever more quickly into a sad state of irrelevance.

After winning the Conference USA championship as the head coach of Eastern Carolina (not technically a state but we’ll gloss over that fact for now), Skip Holtz was brought into South Florida to continue to build a program dragged into the new century by Jim Levitt.

However, after his third year at the helm ended with a 3-9 record, Holtz was fired, despite having been signed to an extension prior to the season.

With Holtz scuttled out of town, the former head coach’s star recruit, Asiantii Woulard, has had no choice but to decommit from the program until a new coaching staff is brought aboard.

“I am decommitted from USF, keeping options open until things settle but USF is still in the mix,” Woulard said on Twitter and later confirmed through text message. “USF is still being considered, but I have to wait and see what happens with (the) staff. I’m not just (going to) go and don’t even know the coaches.”

Woulard, out of Winter Park, Fla., is the nation’s No. 1 dual-threat quarterback recruit and obviously he was seen as the stepping stone towards the elite program Holtz was hoping to build at USF.

Woulard was named the MVP of the Elite 11 summer camp and had already been committed to USF at that point. He had chosen the school over Maryland, Rutgers, Syracuse, Purdue and Ole Miss.

Depending, of course, on who the USF athletic department brings in to head up their program, Woulard will decide whether or not there is once again a fit for him on the team and on campus.

Until then, he will be taking several unofficial visits, but he has not yet disclosed where he will be headed.
