Rumor Mill: Will Cam Cameron be the next LSU Tigers offensive coordinator?

Cam Cameron, formerly the offensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens, may be headed back to the collegiate ranks in order to take over the offense at LSU.

Cameron was the Ravens’ offensive coordinator from 2008 until the middle of the 2012-13 season. He was fired mid-year by coach John Harbaugh, and unfortunately for him, Baltimore dominated while he watched on his flatscreen from home. Joe Flacco rolled through the postseason without an interception. Simply put, after years of being a defensively-headlined franchise, it was the team’s offense, under Jim Caldwell, that carried the Ravens to a Lombardi Trophy.

Despite the fact that Baltimore’s offense performed far better without Cameron, the longtime coach and coordinator may back at it in no time. According to Pete Rousse of CoachingSearch.com, Cameron may be headed to Baton Rouge to take over Les Miles’ offense with the Bayou Bengals.

A lot of coaches wonder if the speculation about Cam Cameron joining the LSU staff as offensive coordinator is legit. From what I here, it is. A source tells me Cameron has been offered the job, in which case Steve Kragthorpe would move to an off-the-field position on the staff. Greg Studrawa would drop the offensive coordinator title and remain the offensive line coach.

He is one of the winningest coordinators in NFL history. However, and prior to his years in Baltimore, Cameron spent one awful season as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins, going 1-15. Ironically, his only win that year came against the Ravens.

He ran San Diego’s offense from 2002-2006, helping the Chargers go 47-33 in that span. The Ravens were 53-24 while he was the team’s OC. Thus, in 10 years as an offensive coordinator, Cameron has been a part of 100 regular season wins, or 10 per year for those math whiz-kids out there.

Under the Mad Hatter, LSU has dominated defensively, but the Tigers’ offense has always held the program back. The 2012 BCS title game against rival Alabama serves as the perfect microcosm for Miles’ tenure with the school: The 21-0 defeat simply did not have to happen. There is always going to be talent at a place like LSU, but Miles and his staff, for whatever reasons (and there are several) have not been able to maximize it offensively on a regular basis.

With Cameron helping tutor quarterback Zach Mettenberger, who has all the talent in the world, as well as running back Jeremy Hill, Alfred Blue and others — and we’re not even getting into receivers such as Odell Backham and Jarvis Landry and a gaggle of studly linemen — this program has a chance to really take off.

Or, of course, they could keep Cameron for a little while before convincing Caldwell to take over. It worked for Baltimore, didn’t it?
