Cayleb Jones, Texas Longhorns WR, charged with felony assault

Cayleb Jones is a 6-foot-3, 211-pound wide receiver who recently finished up his freshman season with the Texas Longhorns. However, following charges of aggravated assault, a second-degree felony in the state of Texas, he may not be around for a sophomore campaign.

According to NBC Sports, a warrant has been issued for Jones’ arrest, but it is not yet known whether or not he has turned himself in to authorities.

The charge stems from a fight Jones got into and — technically — won against Joseph Swaysland, a Horns tennis player. Jones broke the young man’s jaw in a fight over Katherine Bell, a Texas volleyball player. Apparently, Swaysland is dating her, but Jones used to, and the relationship between the football player and the young lady had ended poorly.

The entire event runs deeper than merely one punch and the broken jaw, obviously. According to an affidavit, Jones “carried jealousy and anger” following the breakup. Further, a week before the punch, Jones told Bell that he didn’t “like the way you are happy and I don’t want you talking to [him].”

This is simply the latest in a recent string of legal issues for coach Mack Brown’s program. Backup quarterback Case McCoy was sent home the night before the Alamo Bowl on sexual assault charges, and offensive coordinator Major Applewhite had a consensual affair with a student. The longtime head man issued a brief statement on the issue, saying that Jones “has been suspended from all team activities pending the completion of the legal process.”

Jones appeared in 12 games in 2012, but only caught two passes for 35 yards, adding one rushing attempt for 10 yards.

A four-star recruit, however, Jones had been seen as merely having scratched the surface of his potential. He was going to be given an opportunity to compete for a starting spot in 2013 after being ranked the No. 5-overall wide receiver recruit in the nation, the No. 7-recruit at any position in the state of Texas and the No. 41-ranked recruit at any position in the entire country.
