Chip Kelly did an about-face after announcing that he would be returning to Eugene to continue on as the head coach of the Oregon Ducks. He shocked the sporting world by accepting the vacant coaching job with the Philadelphia Eagles.
The offensive mastermind and spread-option innovator maintained that it was never about the money, and while that is probably true on some level, a solid paycheck can’t hurt.
On Sunday, terms of his contract were released, and without ever having stepped foot onto an NFL field as a head coach, the Eagles made him one of the richest coaches in the league.
According to ESPN, the Eagles won a bidding war for the services of Kelly against the Cleveland Browns, inking the coach to a five-year, $32.5 million deal. The contract will pay him $6.5 million annually.
He is expected to turn around a franchise that has tallied six wins over the previous two seasons and zero playoff victories since 2008; for that amount of money, Philly fans and members of the front office are going to expect that turnaround to come quickly.
