ESPN300 recruit Corn Elder set to play more than just football for Miami Hurricanes

On Wednesday, the Miami Hurricanes football team was not the only beneficiary of Corn Elder’s decision to send his Letter of Intent to Coral Gables.

The 5-foot-10, 170-pounder was named the No. 2-overall player in the entire state of Tennessee and No. 203-nationally. However, Elder, who may play cornerback or running back or receiver at The U, did not feel comfortable signing with a program on 2013 National Signing Day on Feb. 6.

Because he did not even know if he was going to play football anywhere in college.

Elder is also an elite basketball player. He spent the majority of his time as a recruit feeling out which schools were serious about giving him a chance to hit the hardwood, and which were willing to let him try his hand at both football and basketball at the D-I level.

Now, according to Barton Simmons of InsideTheU, Elder will have that chance with Miami.

The Miami basketball team — just in case you are one of the two or three people out there who haven’t heard — is playing at literally the highest level it ever has. After losing a head-scratcher to Florida Gulf Coast in the Canes’ second game of the year, guard Shane Larkin and Co. have caught fire and should head into the ACC Tournament as the conference’s top seed, barring a looming away game against conference heavyweight Duke.

With superstar running back Duke Johnson taking handoffs from soon-to-be senior Stephen Morris, Miami’s offense was already supposed to be vastly improved. The addition of Elder simply gives coach Al Golden and newly hired offensive coordinator James Coley yet another weapon with which to punish opposing ACC defenses.

The chance to lace ‘em up not only for a football program on the rise, but also for a basketball team that has already arrived, has proven to be a chance Corn Elder could not pass up.
