Making Good Monday – Danny Kanell, Still in the Game

This week’s installment will highlight the continued success of former Seminole quarterback Danny Kanell. Kanell exhibits the indomitability of spirit and the dedication and passion that lives in the hearts of all Seminoles.

During his time at Florida State, Kanell slung the ball 851 times, completing 529 of those attempts for a total of 6,372 yards. 57 of those passes went for touchdowns, making him the all-time school leader in career touchdown passes. Kanell also added one touchdown rush over the course of his time in Tallahassee.

As a part of the 1992, ’93, ’94, and ’95 Seminole squads, Kanell was a four-time ACC champion and a National Champion (in 1993).

After graduating, Kanell entered the 1996 NFL draft. The New York Giants selected him in the fourth round, 130th overall.

His NFL career would total seven seasons, spanning nine years, from 1996 to 2004: three with the Giants, two with the Atlanta Falcons, and two with the Denver Broncos (one of which he did not take a snap during). During his time in the NFL, Kanell threw 956 passes, completing 51.4 percent of his throws for 5,129 yards and 31 touchdowns.

Kanell appeared in one playoff game over the course of his NFL career, in 1997, after leading the Giants to the NFC East Division title. The game resulted in a 23-to-22 Giants’ loss to the Minnesota Vikings in which he threw for 199 yards and a touchdown. This playoff loss put an end to what may have been Kanell’s best season as a pro.

Now, after eight years out of the league Kanell is back in the football world as the co-host of ESPNU’s new show UNITE.

UNITE was launched on August 27^th of this year and is billed as a blend of “sports and stuff.” It airs at midnight on ESPNU. Kanell co-hosts the show with Reese Waters, Marianela and DJ Rob Swift, using his sports knowledge and understanding of the quarterback position to lend viewers an insightful take on the weekly happening in college sports.
