Florida State DE Brandon Jenkins Done for Year

After crumbling under the weight of immense expectations a season ago, the Florida State Seminoles had been hoping to ride the dual wave of a talented roster and a relatively easy schedule all the way to the BCS Championship Game in 2012. In theory, and especially in the hearts and minds of ‘Noles fans everywhere, the title seemed like a legitimate goal for this uber-talented group.

Those championship hopes, however, absorbed a major blow with the news of the loss of All-ACC defensive end Brandon Jenkins for the year. Jenkins is by no means a benchwarmer. In fact, the dude led his team in sacks for both the 2010 and ’11 seasons. After Jenkins had recorded his first sack of the season in the first quarter of Saturday’s game, one of the wheels on the ‘Noles magic bus blew when he had to walk himself off the field after his own teammate stepped on his left foot.

FSU won this game by a final score of 69-3. Murray State watched Jenkins go down, but they themselves could not hurt a fly.

If you are not acquainted with Jenkins, you really do not understand just how unfortunate of a loss this is. An unquestioned leader on this team, Jenkins was nominated for a slew of preseason awards, including the Nagurski, Camp and Bednarik.

Following last season, he had decided to stay at FSU and chase that ever-elusive national championship instead of jumping ship for the 2012 NFL Draft, even though he had been a projected first-round pick.

Down by so many points so quickly, it would have been easy to suspect that at least a few of the Racers would be trying to get Jenkins out of the game. The funny thing about it is, they were so bad, they needed the Seminoles to do it for them.
