Florida tops Yale to close out non-conference schedule, Kenny Boynton sets school record

Florida forward Will Yeguete stepped in for the injured Erik Murphy and put in 14 points and 9 rebounds.

The Florida Gators men’s basketball team closed out it’s non-conference schedule with a 79-58 victory over Yale on Sunday.

Yale was in the game through the majority of the first half, but after guard Javier Dunn cut the Gators lead to 26-24, Florida responded with a 9-0 run to end the half and start the route.

Florida senior guard Kenny Boynton finally broke out of his shooting slump scoring a game-high 28 points and breaking the school record for career 3-point field goals made. “He was able to shoot the ball in more of a rhythm when he knew he had enough space to get the ball off. He really, really shot it well and that certainly helped us,” Florida head coach Billy Donovan said.

The Gators were forced to play without senior forward Erik Murphy who was scratched from Sunday’s game, in what was a sort of homecoming for him, due to a rib injury. However, junior forward Will Yeguete responded with 14 points and 9 rebounds. “When we lose someone like Erik, we just have to come together as a team and do a better job overall,” Yeguete said.

The Gators will open conference play at home against the Georgia Bulldogs on Wednesday.
