These two are no average student-athletes. While football players may have been spending their summers working out on campus or wherever else, Mance spent his in London as a member of the 2012 United States Olympic Team.
After two years at USC, Mance transferred to FSU, where he honed his skills at the 400-meter dash to the point where he earned a fourth-place finish at the US Olympic Trails. Once in London, he and his teammates proved to be among the very best in the history of the world in winning a silver medal in the 4×400-meter relay.
Newbold is a native of the Bahamas, who has starred at youth championship events for years. In 2011, he won the gold medal in the 200-meter dash at the World Youth Championships in Athletics in France.
Both obviously have quite a bit to lose if their racing career at Florida State is over. Again, we are not going to make any speculation regarding their future at school or in their chosen sport.
The legal process is only beginning to play itself out, and the Florida State athletic department will take appropriate measures when the time is right.
According to WCTV.tv, a Florida State student-athlete was arrested for discharging a firearm:
According to Dave Northway with the Tallahassee Police Department, a Florida State University student athlete has been arrested for discharging a firearm.
Reports are still coming in from several different sources, and all the news is still very much in the early stages of release. We are not going to share any speculation, nor are we going to pretend to know what exactly is going on in Tallahassee at the moment.
The Orlando Sentinel has released an early report as well:
Florida State student-athletes were involved in an off-campus shooting incident Wednesday night, according to reports. The university is expected to release a statement on the situation at some point Thursday.
It does not appear anyone was actually shot.
FSU police Major Jim Russell told the Orlando Sentinel on Thursday morning that his department was informed of an overnight gunplay incident in a location of the city away from FSU’s campus. He said the Tallahassee Police Department was handling the investigation.
Check back throughout the day for further updates as the situation continues to unfold.
