The Halifax Mosseheads’ Brian Lovell, a 17-year old junior hockey player, tried to make a move against the Montcon Wildcats’ Ross Johnston. Instead, Lovell got the business end of Johnston’s stick, and released this picture of the end result.
Definitely not pretty, and after watching the tape, it definitely doesn’t look like Johnston’s stick flew into Lovell’s jaw accidentally. Of course, he probably wasn’t trying to cause such serious damage, but the intent to harm on some level was there.
No penalties were called on the play (we probably shouldn’t be saying this, but it really was a fantastic job on Johnston’s part to make it look like an accident in real time). Since, however, Johnston has been suspended indefinitely pending review.
Which is probably very little consolation to Lovell at this point. The young man is out for the remainder of the year.
