Orioles star pranks prospect Kevin Gausman with more than 1,500 powdered donuts

LSU Tigers pitcher Kevin Gausman (12) pitches against the Stony Brook Seawolves in the fourth inning of game two of the Baton Rouge super regional at Alex Box Stadium. Apparently, he had already eaten more than dozen donuts by that point. (Crystal Logiudice-USA TODAY Sports)

Kevin Gausman was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles following a highly successful run with the LSU Tigers. While most Tigers fans enjoyed his exploits on the mound, hardly any knew what made the man tick.

Would any fans had guessed that it was mini powdered donuts, and lots of them?

According to USA Today, Gausman just snacks on one mini powdered donut before he starts a ballgame. His superstitious donut-eating practice began in seventh grade, continued all the way through his time at LSU, and it does not stop with the start of the game.

Quite the contrary, in fact; Gausman only starts crushing more donuts as the game wears on. He literally eats four between each inning. Yes, for those wondering, a full daily serving size, as recommended by Hostess, is four. Should Gausman pitch a complete, nine-inning ball game, his habits translate to 33 mini powdered donuts.

Sickening to some, unbelievable to others, and finally, an opportunity for Orioles superstar Adam Jones.

Jones signed a massive, multi-year contract with the Orioles prior to the 2012 season. He has his entire career invested in the franchise and his desire to turn the beleaguered team into a perennial winner.

So what is a solid 1,500 donuts between friends?

When Gausman rolled into the Orioles’ spring training locker room on Sunday, he was greeted by Jones and literally enough donuts to carry the young pitcher through the entire season. The more innings Gausman pitches, the more donuts he eats. Presumably, the more donuts he eats, the more successful he is on the mound. The more successful he is, the more successful the entire team is.

So, were the donuts a gift or a prank?

With an entire season yet to be played, Jones, Gausman and the rest of the Orioles organization will just have to wait and see.
