Kevin Sumlin receives contract extension from Texas A&M
Show Sumlin the money! On Saturday it was announced that Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin had received a lucrative five-year contract extension that will keep him in College Station through 2017.
Sumlin guided the Aggies to an 11-2 finish in just his first year at the helm, including a Cotton Bowl victory over Oklahoma and a Heisman Trophy for freshman Johnny Manziel. It was the first year that A&M finished in the top 5 since 1956.
Sumlin won’t be the only one benefiting from the stellar season, as the assistant coaches will also receive “compensation packages” for their efforts, according to ESPN.
Sumlin’s original contract was a five-year deal worth $2 million per year; he earned $2.4 million for this past season based on incentives.
According to the press release from athletic director Eric Hyman, the A&M System Board of Regents will approve/deny the extension on Feb. 1, 2013.
