The NCAA spent more than 22 months investigating infractions committed by various employees of the Miami athletic department. On Tuesday, college sports’ governing body sent their notice of allegations to the University.

The letter of allegations basically wraps up the investigation, which is a huge milestone on several levels.

First, the school can expect to receive its actual punishments within the next 90 days. Throughout all of the uncertainty surrounding the botched and bungled investigation, Miami has voluntarily held itself out of the last two postseasons and left a number of scholarships unused.

Those actions were undertaken with the hope that the NCAA would go a little easier on the school once the punishments were, in fact, laid down.

All of that being said, however, the actual arrival of the notice comes as somewhat of a surprise. Mark Emmert, the head of the NCAA investigative body, admitted to a massive failure in the Miami case and an overall and widespread lack of oversight within his organization.

Thus, many close to the situation thought the NCAA was simply going to drop the case altogether. In fact, school president Donna E. Shalala released a statement urging the  NCAA to put an end to what she, and countless others, see as something that should have been put to rest long ago.

As for the NCAA itself, who is apparently prepared to move onto the sanction phase, no one was made available for comment.
