Missouri Tigers remain winless in the SEC

The Missouri Tigers remain winless in the SEC after four in-conference games, including their 42-10 blowout loss to Alabama on Saturday. As newly minted members of the SEC, the Tigers are averaging a horrific 13.8 points per game and allowing 33.3 points per game. They even managed to lose to Vanderbilt at home, 19-15; Vandy has been known as the low men on the SEC totem pole.

Mizzou’s first year in the SEC is not the main cause of their demise; it is more due to the inconsistent play at quarterback. Junior quarterback James Franklin has recently faced injuries and, even if he is healthy again, its not clear if he is consistent and accurate enough to excel in coach Gary Pinkel’s offense.

Freshman QB Corbin Berkstresser has had great difficulty in place of Franklin. Berkstresser was just 12-of-29 for 126 passing yards, with two interceptions against Alabama.

There are many fans who are becoming disgruntled with Mizzou’s play and some of them are blaming the coaching staff. To some extent the complaints are warranted, since the offense has looked out of sorts and unprepared for most of the season.

Frustrated fans on ColumbiaMissourian.com share:

“Get a professional collegiate coaching staff and get Pinkel and staff out of town yesterday,” Bruce Barton wrote.

“This is more for the coaching staff: we need an accurate, throw-first quarterback,” Naif Bartlett wrote. “Neither Franklin nor Berkstresser will cut it.”

With a record of 3-4, the Tigers will have to fight the rest of the year to become bowl eligible. Of their five remaining opponents, two are currently ranked and three games will be on the road. Missouri still has to travel to Florida, Tennessee, and Texas A&M. They will likely be favored against Kentucky and Syracuse and should win both of those games; but then again, they were also favored to beat Vanderbilt.

The funny thing is, I’m not sure the Zou would have done much better in the Big 12 this season. They play a full 9 game slate in that league. Let’s say newcomer TCU wasn’t in the league, so their conference schedule would have included KSU, OU, WVU, Texas and Tech. Baylor/ISU/OSU are all pretty scrappy so the only sure win would have been Kansas.
