Montrel Meander flips commitment from Washington State to Texas

It only took three days to go from phone call to flip, but such is the recruiting strength of Mack Brown and the Texas Longhorns. Three-star wide receiver Montreal Meander, a native of Amarillo (Texas) Palo Duro, has officially flipped from Washington State to the Horns. Meander confirmed his flip via text message to ESPN HornsNation on Monday.

According to Max Olson of HornsNation, Meander never even met a Texas coach in person until his official visit this Saturday.

Washington State head coach Mike Leach is known for his wide-open, quick-strike offensive schematics. Montreal could have put up big numbers as a receiver there as well. However, several sites reported that he had actually been leaning towards playing safety, where he lined up defensively in high school. The Cougars were prepared to let him do so.

Leach may eventually bring in some talented guys, but in this case he simply could not compete with Earl Campbell and Vince Young. Brown and his staff had the two Longhorns legends meet the young man during his visit.

He was supposed to be headed to the Pacific Northwest and playing defense. In the topsy-turvy world of college recruiting, Montreal became the 15th member of 2013 recruiting class for Texas and its third receiver pledge. Standing in at 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, Meander will have an opportunity to immediately work in as a deep threat for improving quarterback David Ash.
