No college football this weekend? No problem
There's still plenty of sporting treats this weekend
There are no bruising Big Ten battles to look forward to this weekend. This Saturday will have to be completed without any spectacular SEC play.
What to do, college football fans, until the bowl season is upon us? How can we replace all the tailgating we have been doing in support of our favorite teams with no top 25 football games scheduled for another several weeks?
It is time we expand our horizons, boys and girls; it is time we find new, creative ways to watch sports and have drinks (or have many drinks and watch a little sports, whatever your preference may be).
Not that there isn't any college football for us to enjoy come Saturday; Navy and Army renew their annual rivalry at 3:00 p.m. ET.
What are we here at Gamedayr Nation going to be watching (and making up some bizarre drinking games too) this weekend?
First things first, hit the hardcourt
If you've had a cocktail or two, try to brace yourself before you hit it face-first.
You've got to love 'old man jokes'.
Anyways, pretty much every team in the top 25 is lacing them up on Saturday. If your football team pulled a Kansas -- or if your football team is Kanas -- then now is as good of a time as ever to make the sporting switch.
If your team is playing in a prestigious bowl game, but you can't wait that long to find an excuse to crack open a cold one, then once again now is as good of a time as any to familiarize yourself with your basketball team.
Just be careful, if your team is playing too well you'll end up sounding like a giant head version of Harry Carey, and that's only funny for the first five minutes.
Same hardcourt, different sport
It is time to show some love to the volleyball girls of the college sports world, as their season really kicks into high gear.
With conferences each setting up television channels and with a little invention called the internet, exposure for this sport in recent years has gone through the roof.
The Round of 16 will be undertaken this weekend, meaning the best of the best will be playing each other for keeps. Two of the nation's premiere squads take the court on Saturday, when UCLA visits Nebraska at 7 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network.
If you have to ask why you would want to pregame before the bars and watch uber-fit girls flying around while wearing spandex, then you'll never know.
Get your violence fix: Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez
Trying to drink a bunch of beer and watch some dudes beat the living daylights out of each other?
Luckily, the legendary Manny Pacquiao is taking on Juan Manuel Marquez for the fourth time on Saturday night, only on HBO and pay-per-view. It isn't basketball, nor is it pretty girls in spandex, but it is a great excuse to get to your favorite bar, dominate some beer and some wings and, again, watch some dudes pummel the heck out of each other.
Who's got their eyes on the Heisman?
On Saturday night at 8 p.m. Eastern, either Kansas State's Collin Klein, Notre Dame's Manti Te'o, or Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel will be awarded the Heisman Trophy.
The Trophy is presented annually to the nation's premier college football player, but we all knew that already.
How are we going to celebrate the winner? Well, that is where folks nationwide can and should get creative. Fans of teams from UCLA to UConn have found funky ways to get their tailgating going, why not hunker down at your favorite bar and drink for who wins?
Since Klein is the strong, silent, senior leader, he deserves a shot of whiskey. Johnny Football? Tequila, and if you have to ask why, you're probably not watching the presentation in the first place. Manti Te'o is a Hawaiian Mormon at a Catholic school in the frigid-cold Midwest, and would be only the second defensive player to win it should his name be announced.
That sounds like a wild card if there ever was one: Jager Bombs.
Get your college football fix: The Army-Navy Game
There are plenty of big things going down in the world of college sports over the weekend, but if you really cannot go without your college football fix (this coming from a humble blogger that will definitely be watching) there is one final regular season game to take in on Saturday.
The Black Knights will be taking on the Midshipmen in the 113th edition of the Army-Navy football game.
For the first time since 2005, both programs have beaten Air Force. The win was unexpected for Army, only 2-9 on the season, but Navy has won six of its last seven games to get to 7-4 on the year. Thus, whomever wins Saturday's game earns the invite to the White House to be presented with the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy.
The tradition was begun by Richard Nixon back in 1972, but don't try to lift it, especially for all you weekend warriors out there that may have been drinkin'.
The Trophy weighs a whopping 170 pounds.
