Florida defensive tackle Omar Hunter takes shot at Meyer, states “he was out for himself”

| November 30, 2012 at 10:52 am | 12 Comments

Tell us how you really feel Omar. According to an article published by Yahoo! Sports, Florida Gators defensive tackle Omar Hunter is not very fond of former head coach Urban Meyer.

Hunter, now in his fifth year with the Gators, was one of Meyer’s prized recruits who didn’t quite seem to pan out. That is, until new head coach Will Muschamp stepped on campus and turned around the mentality of the football program.

Hunter had the following to say regarding Meyer and the way he ran the football program:

“Toward the end of Coach Meyer’s time here, a lot of guys were out for themselves – not buying into the team concept,” explains defensive lineman Omar Hunter. “He was out for himself, so they thought the same thing.

“A lot of things were sliding,” he contiues, explaining how their coach’s sudden departure, return and re-departure impacted the team. “Guys were showing up late to practice and workouts. Guys were supposed to be back on Sunday and didn’t get back until Monday. There was no discipline.”

It was no secret that the Gators program was falling apart, and Meyer was the catalyst behind it. Players were doing what players wanted to do. A rockstar mentality had set in and it wasn’t going away without a significant change; especially while Meyer was playing with the emotions of an entire university and fan base like it was his sixth grade girlfriend.

The change that was needed came in the form of Coach Boom, a “no bull” type of personality, who in just two years has completely reversed the mentality of Florida football.

“I loved it,” says Hunter. “He’s hard-nosed, not going to let anything slide. Not tell you any lies.”

Eric Adelson of Yahoo! Sports has written a fantastic article titled “Gators going boom under anti-Spurrier.” Give it a read Gator Nation.

Do you think Meyer was “out for himself”? Let us know in the comments below!

Meyer was definitely up to something. He was getting paid huge amounts and the results were gone. We fans watched this team fall apart in 2 years and combine that with Daz’s dive offense…. horrible. And indigestion + wanting to spend time with his family was a cheap way out. Yes if he really wanted to retire and spend time with his kids I think we’d have been cool with it. Especially since his team was crashing and burning. But then he runs to POSu. That mentality of his will work at the big 10 for a while. they are slow and easy to beat :D

Absolutely! When Tebow graduated coach was out of there. He was only in to be recognized as a Steve Spurrier or Bobby Bowden kind of coach. Sorry you lose.

Can never see Spurrier as a traitor…he decided he needed a change after 12 solid years, so he left for the NFL. After that didn’t work out he came back to college and wanted to come home after “we” fired the “Zooker”, but “we” didn’t want him back so he took the SCAR job. I can never fault him for that; and Steve more than most was, is and always will be a Gator. Urban Meyer, definitely a POS and desreves the POS school he is coaching now, I wish him nothing but the perrenial runner-up slot in any NC game!!

Being from OHIO myself, but a die hard GATOR fan, yes he was out for himself and nothing more. I am waiting for the day he does the same thing to OSU. Revenge was SWEET when the GATORS once again beat OSU last season but this time with MEYERS coaching them!!

For sure stated he needed time away because he was ill. Such a lame excuse to use and then only to go back to coaching right after he left Florida.

Yes. The most disgusting was to cry wolf/heart/stress then get the job he wanted after quitting. His attitude affected the team and any recruits. I’m sure there were players that didn’t sign on because of a his behavior.

Urban doesn’t stay anywhere to long. I think for some reason he thinks he will start losing, & can’t sustain his winning ways. When he started losing some games with the Gators he was out of there. I appreciate the Championships he led the Gators to. However I’m glad he’s gone. We have a great coach in the making with Boom. And he wants to be here. You can see the fire in his eyes, his record so far speaks for itself. “Go Gators!”

Urban liar what a joke , he didn’t run this football program Tebow did it himself and Meyer got all the credit. We know what a self centered jerk he was and is. What goes around will come around and it will bite you in a—!!!!

His talent pool dried up’d with Tebow graduating. He was worried about his win/lose stats. With Brantley under center, he knew he wouldn’t have the “running” QB he needed to win. So he bailed on the Gator Nation.

I think Urban Meyer has a hero complex. He has to feel like he is coming into a program to save the day, but he doesn’t have the balls to stay with anything. Once it’s “saved” he’s off to be a hero somewhere else. It’s ALL about him. I think he’s a jerk.
