The Boston Celtics were handed the worst possible news on Sunday when it was confirmed that star point guard Rajon Rondo will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL in his right knee.
Rondo hurt himself late in the Celtics double-overtime 123-111 loss to the Atlanta Hawks. An MRI on Sunday revealed what was previously believed to be a hyperextended right knee was actually a season-ending injury.
The Celtics entered Sunday’s game against the Miami Heat at 20-23 and on a six game losing streak, and with the loss of Rondo, Boston has more than an uphill battle on their hands for the second half of the season.
For the season, Rondo was averaging 13.7 points, an NBA-leading 11.1 assists and 5.6 rebounds per game.
