2013 No. 1-overall recruit Robert Nkemdiche set to visit Florida

The biggest fish in the national recruiting pond is still swimming circles around all the lines cast by major college football recruiting staffs.

Most of the nation’s elite high school recruits had committed to schools as juniors or sometime soon after the final whistle sounded on their senior seasons at the prep level. Others made their decisions on national television either during the Army All-America game or the Under Armour All-America game.

However, the No. 1-overall recruit in the nation, 6-foot-5 defensive end Robert Nkemdiche, has still yet to make his decision.

And that is fantastic news for Florida Gators fans — in a surprise to most recruiting experts and reporters, Nkemdiche will be taking an official visit to Gainesville on Friday and he will be staying for the weekend.

Nkemdiche had accepted a full ride to Clemson early on, only to rescind his commitment as the recruiting process wore on. His older brother, Denzel Nkemdiche, led Ole Miss with 82 tackles as a mere freshman, so the Rebels have worked their way into little brother’s top two.

During the Under Armour game, the most information Nkemdiche would give was that he was down to two finalists: Ole Miss and LSU.

Thus the surprise when Woody Wommack of Rivals.com reported Nkemdiche’s visit to The Swamp.

After saying at the Under Armour Game in Orlando, Fla., that he was basically down to Ole Miss and LSU, the nation’s No. 1 player, Robert Nkemdiche, is planning on taking an official visit to Florida this weekend, according to his high school coach.

Loganville (Ga.) Grayson High head coach Mickey Conn confirmed Nkemdiche’s visit plans via a text message to Rivals.com on Tuesday.

Coach Will Muschamp’s 2013 recruiting class is already been listed as the best in the nation by essentially every major recruiting service out there. Should Nkemdiche like what he sees, he will have the chance to practice side-by-side with five-star defensive back Vernon Hargreaves III and four-star linebacker Alex Anzalone, who recently flipped from Notre Dame to the Gators, among several others.

Muschamp has stated repeatedly that he is working to build a program that can be a winner over the long term.

However, with the class already in place, and the potential addition of Nkemdiche as he visits over the weekend, Muschamp’s crew may just start winning even more than 2012’s successful run, and right away.

Check out where Nkemdiche and the rest of Florida’s recruits rank in the final ESPN300.
