Empire State Building will light up red for the Scarlet Knights

The Big Ten has been traditionally a Midwestern conference. However, with what is easily the country’s most lucrative broadcasting deal in its back pocket, commissioner Jim Delany was able to lure Rutgers from the Big East to the ever-expanding league in order to break into the nation’s largest TV market, New York City.

Before the Scarlet Knights ride off into the sunset of their increased cash flow, the program has some unfinished business to attend to in beating Louisville and earning the Big East’s automatic BCS Bowl bid.

The type of support one of the nation’s most iconic buildings is lending to the State School of New Jersey is precisely the type of New York City love Delany and the rest of the Big Ten brass is hoping for: The Empire State Building is planning to light up its massively high roof red in support of the 9-2 (5-1 in-conference) Knights.

The Empire State Building has been lit up in support of Rutgers once before, also for a matchup against the Cardinals. In 2006, both teams met with perfect records and Rutgers managed to pull out a 28-25 win

Obviously, this win would mean just as much, if not far more. Rutgers has never earned the right to participate in a BCS bowl, and the win would send the outright Big East Champions to either the Orange or Sugar Bowl, most likely.

Sometimes, you’ve just got to get yourself into an Empire State of mind. Just ask Rutgers — and Jim Delaney.
