Coach Jim Harbaugh made the extremely controversial decision to go with second-year and totally unproven Colin Kaepernick over Alex Smith after Smith went down with a concussion. Smith had finally begun to make good on the promise he showed as the Niners’ No. 1 draft pick in the 2005 NFL Draft.
On Saturday, Kaepernick made his coach look like a genius in the team’s huge, 45-31, win over the Green Bay Packers to earn a berth in the NFC Championship game for the second consecutive year.
Kaepernick rushed for the most yards in the history of the NFL for a quarterback, regular or postseason. On just 16 carries, the young gunner piled up 181 yards and two touchdowns.

However, he was not merely one-dimensional on Saturday night. He also threw for two scores on 17-of-31 passing attempts for 263 yards. Both of his touchdown passes went to the uber-talented Michael Crabtree, who finished with nine receptions for 119 yards and the aforementioned two touchdowns.
