SEC Players of the Week, Week 6

The SEC announced the Players of the Week for week six of the college football season.

Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel was named SEC freshman of the week.

SEC Offensive Player of the Week

Florida RB Mike Gillislee

Florida senior halfback Mike Gillislee helped Florida secure the 14-6 win over LSU. Gillislee accounted for both of the Gators touchdowns and ran for a career high 146 yards against a stout LSU defensive line.

SEC Defensive Player of the Week No. 1

Florida, S, Matt Elam

Florida junior safety Matt Elam was around the ball the entire game in Florida’s 14-6 upset of LSU. Elam had 7 solo tackles and was the leader of a defense that allowed only one 3rd down conversion the entire game. Elam also had the biggest play of the game when LSU junior quarterback Zach Mettenberger completed a 56-yard pass to sophomore wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., only to have Elam strip the ball from behind.

SEC Defensive Player of the Week No.2

LSU, LB, Kevin Minter

The LSU defense started strong against Florida and helped the Tigers lead 6-0 at half, before Florida came back to win 14-6. LSU junior linebacker Kevin Minter was outstanding accounting for 20 total tackles in the game, which is the most in the SEC for a single game this season. Minter also had 2 sacks and a forced fumble in the game.

SEC Special Teams Player of the Week No. 1

South Carolina, RS/WR, Ace Sanders

South Carolina dominated Georgia in every way possible, even the return game in the 35-7 blowout. Junior wide receiver Ace Sanders returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown.

SEC Special Teams Player of the Week No. 2

Vanderbilt, P, Richard Kent

Vanderbilt was able to squeak out a 19-15 win over Missouri, thanks in part to good field position. Vanderbilt senior punter Richard Kent averaged 45 yards per punt, with plenty of air allowing the coverage team to get down the field, only allowing Missouri to return one punt for 3 yards.

SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week

South Carolina, C, T.J. Johnson

South Carolina senior center T.J. Johnson helped lead an offense that scored 35 points, in the 35-7 win over Georgia. Johnson had 7 knockdowns and allowed no quarterback pressure for the Gamecocks. His play helped South Carolina get 392 yards in the game.

SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week

Arkansas, DE, Trey Flowers

Arkansas sophomore Trey Flowers was a part of a defensive effort that led to Arkansas’ 24-7 win over Auburn. Flowers had 3.5 sacks, which is the most in the SEC for a single game this season. He also had 5 total tackles and helped anchor a defense that forced five turnovers.

SEC Freshman of the Week No. 1

Mississippi State, LB, Bernardrick McKinney

Mississippi State was dominate defensively against Kentucky winning 27-14 only allowing 228 total yards. McKinney led the Bulldogs with 12 tackles in the game

SEC Freshman of the Week No. 2

Texas A&M, QB, Johnny Manziel

Aggies quarterback Johnny Manziel led his team to a come from behind 30-27 victory over Ole Miss. Manziel was able to overcome 2 interceptions by running for 129 yards and throwing for 191 yards. Most importantly Manziel put together two late game touchdown drives to give the Aggies the win.
