Ex-Maryland coach Joe Krivak dies at the age of 77

Joe Krivak, who was the football coach at the University of Maryland from 1987-91, passed away on Tuesday night, according to the university.

Under Krivak’s direction the Terrapins were only 20-34-2, but his best years were before, when he was the quarterbacks coach under Bobby Ross.

Working under Ross in the 1980s, Krivak tutored the likes of Boomer Esiason, Frank Reich and Stan Gelbaugh.

Current Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson said of Krivak: “He tutored some of the most prolific quarterbacks to play in College Park and helped develop them for future success in the NFL.”

Krivak was promoted to head coach after Ross departed for Georgia Tech, and his best season came in 1990. His team finished with a 6-5-1 record, tying Louisiana Tech in the Independence Bowl.
