The Chippewas Chip Away at the Hawkeyes

| September 24, 2012 at 10:26 pm | 0 Comments

The Iowa Hawkeyes fall short to the Central Michigan Chippewas, 32-31. David Harman, Central Michigans kicker, kicked a 47-yard field goal with :08 seconds left in the fourth quarter to put the Chippewas on top.

Mark Weisman played a great game, totaling 217 rushing yards and three touchdowns. James Vandenberg ended with 213 total yards through the air and one passing touchdown, his first of the season.

Central Michigan quarterback Ryan Radcliff threw for 282 yards, while his main target, Cody Wilson, caught eight passes for 106 yards. Wide out Titus Davis also racked up two touchdowns and 74 yards total.

The lead went back and forth between both teams throughout the game. As the first half came to a close, the Chippewas were up 23-14. Once the third quarter was over the Hawkeyes were still down, but knocking on the door of the Chippewa end-zone with a score of 23-21. With a field goal by Mike Meyer and a third touchdown from Weisman, the Hawkeyes thought they had it in the bag up 31-23.

However, Titus Davis wasn’t done yet. With :45 seconds left in the fourth quarter he ran in for a touchdown and put the Chippewas in range for a two-point conversion, which they failed to capitalize on.

Confusion then occurred when the Chippewas set up for an onside kick. The wind blew the ball off the tee twice, which then led to them having to hold the ball. The first onside kick was given a penalty for delay of game. The second however was kicked and picked up by the Chippewas special teams’ unit. Radcliff got the team into field goal range and CMU was able to kick a field goal for the win.

The Hawkeyes are now 2-2, and are playing Michigan at home next weekend. Kick off is set for 11:00 am.
