I don’t watch the CBS show “Survivor,” but that may change very soon. “Why?” you ask. Well because former MLB pitcher and well-documented bigot John Rocker is on the next season. And you know who he’s sharing the spotlight with? Oh, just his girlfriend Julie McGee, a pair of African American sisters and a homosexual couple.
Entertainment Weekly broke the news on Wednesday when it released an early look at the lineup for “Survivor: San Juan del Sur — Blood vs. Water.” The other contestants have yet to be announced.
As for Rocker, below is quote from a 1999 Sports Illustrated article that’ll shed some light on why his inclusion with the cast is so intriguing:
“I’d retire first. It’s the most hectic, nerve-racking city. Imagine having to take the 7 train to the ballpark looking like you’re [riding through] Beirut next to some kid with purple hair next to some queer with AIDS right next to some dude who just got out of jail for the fourth time right next to some 20-year-old mom with four kids. It’s depressing… The biggest thing I don’t like about New York are the foreigners. You can walk an entire block in Times Square and not hear anybody speaking English. Asians and Koreans and Vietnamese and Indians and Russians and Spanish people and everything up there. How the hell did they get in this country?”
Yes, that really happened. Unless Rocker has had a revelation, it’s safe to say that the show could get very interesting.
Mark your calendars for Sept. 24 at 8:00 p.m. to see if Rocker throws heat on CBS’ ratings.
