Athletes, celebrities share condolences for Nelson Mandela on Twitter

Nelson Mandela passed away at the age of 95 on Thursday. The former South African president helped lead his country out of apartheid and was a worldwide figure of freedom and peace.

Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years for sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the government. Four years after his release, he became the president. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

The man who had a strong connection with sports made his last public appearance at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

On Thursday, after word of his passing spread, athletes and celebrities tweeted their condolences.
