Led by star slugger David Ortiz, the Red Sox downed the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-1, in Game 6 to win the 2013 World Series. It was the franchise’s third title in ten years, though this one was not exactly expected. Two years after the “Chicken and Beer” embarrassment, and a year after Bobby Valentine left them in the basement, the Boston Red Sox were champions again.
Considering the tragedies of the Boston Marathon, and the team’s iconic status in sports, the Red Sox made the front page of several newspapers.
Below is the USA Today Sports’ page, including the headline, “Boston’s Finest Hour.” Boston’s had not clinched a World Series title at home since 1918, making Wednesday’s Game 6 home victory even sweeter.
“Test and Triumphant,” the Boston Globe’s headline screams victory – as it should.
