If you want a sports equivalent to middle child syndrome, it’s the Preakness Stakes. The race generates 1/10 the buzz of the Kentucky Derby, and it doesn’t have the potential historical impact of the Belmont Stakes. On Saturday the middle child received another kick in the shins when Twitter noticed something about Maryland’s state song: it’s a remix of “O Christmas Tree.”
Yep, prior to California Chrome taking the race, people laughing at “Maryland, My Maryland” was the only buzz generated by the Preakness. I’m a fan of some good snark, so here are a few of the better Twitter reactions for the tune (the fun is in the hashtags).
Did the state of Maryland steal the O’Christmas Tree song? #ReWrappingGiftsAndSongs

The Derby is so much better than #ThePreakness because it doesn’t make you sing “O Christmas Tree” over and over again.

Grew up in Maryland, never knew Maryland, My Maryland, is the same tune as O Christmas Tree! Guess that was back before music lawyers!

Don’t even try to hide the fact that your damn state song is sung to the tune of “O, Christmas Tree”, Maryland. #preakness

A tradition unlike any other: the Preakness on NBC.
That great, annual Preakness tradition: a bunch of people realizing Maryland’s state song is “O Christmas Tree.”
