The Pittsburgh Steelers checked one offseason task off their list on Thursday when they came to terms with Maurkice Pouncey on a new contract. The 5-year deal is worth $44 million, making the former Florida Gator the highest paid center in the NFL, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The 2014 season will mark Pouncey’s fifth as a professional. The No. 18-overall pick from the 2010 NFL Draft played his way to three straight All-Pro and Pro Bowl selections from 2010-2012 before a torn right ACL and MCL sidelined him for essentially the entire 2013 season. Known as a versatile lineman, Pouncey’s signing shores up the Steelers’ need to protect veteran quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
