Little did the world know, but the Evil Empire has a heart. The New York Yankees showed some real class on Sunday by taking out a full-page newspaper ad in the U-T San Diego as a tribute to the late great Tony Gwynn. Mr. Padre passed away on June 16 from cancer at the age of 54.
The ad is subtle in nature, simply stating that the “New York Yankees Remember Tony Gwynn.” It’s an elegant tribute to one of the game’s greatest ambassadors and a highly respected figure off the diamond.

The fact that New York had no real rivalry connections to Gwynn illustrates the reverence held for him in Major League Baseball circles. As Mike Oz of Big League Stew points out, Gwynn only played four games (zero regular season, four postseason) against the Yankees during his storied career.
