The 2014 Preakness Stakes will take place on Saturday, May 17, only two weeks after the Kentucky Derby. This year’s running will be the 139th edition of the race.
Of the three Triple Crown events, it’s the shortest at 9 1/2 furlongs (just under one and a quarter miles). The purse for this year’s event is $1.5 million.
Whereas the Derby has a large field – upwards of 20 horses – the Preakness has significantly smaller draw, maxing out at 14. Considering the dominant fashion in which California Chrome won the 2014 Derby, this year’s Preakness may not even max out its participants.
