The 2014 World Cup marks Switzerland’s third consecutive trip to the tournament. Despite 10 World Cup appearances overall, the team has never made it past the quarterfinals. In 2010 they didn’t even get out of the group stage.
This World Cup holds extra significance for the Swiss, as it will be the swan song for manager Ottmar Hitzfeld. Switzerland is an extremely young team, and it will be interesting to see how they react to the bright lights of Brazil. The Nati are slightly favored to beat out Ecuador to make it out of Group E, which would likely mean a showdown with powerhouse Argentina in the knockout stage.
