Washington Redskins’ New Name Probably Shouldn’t Be Twitter’s Decision

Thank heavens for Twitter, or else Wednesday would’ve been a real nightmare for Daniel Snyder.

By midmorning news had broken that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office was revoking all trademarks for the Washington Redskins name. According to Mike Florio, this means that, should no appeals overturn the decision, anyone and everyone can sell Washington Redskins merchandise – color scheme and all – without any threat of infringement. It’s essentially a power play to cut one of Snyder’s revenue sources at the knees, and force him to change the team name.

Which brings us full circle to Twitter. Should Snyder finally cave to the mounting pressures and decide to change his team’s name, the Twitterverse has some handy suggestions. #NewRedskinsName trended throughout social media and dropped the following golden offerings at the feet of the beleaguered franchise.
