The 2014 Rose Parade, held annually as part of the Rose Bowl’s festivities, featured a wedding in the procession. Danny Leclair and Aubrey Loots, a gay couple, exchanged vows atop the AIDS Healthcare Foundation float.
The foundation decided to hold the wedding in order to celebrate landmark legislative decisions in 2013, which upheld the right to gay marriage in California. Having two homosexual men share their nuptials was also a way for the group to promote AIDS awareness by way of committed relationships. A spokesman told the LA Times that the foundation feels “marriage saves lives.”
Despite a scattering of protests in the lead up to the parade, the Tournament of Roses supported the float and theme. Below is footage from the marriage.
