Welcome back to your regularly scheduled “Nick Saban Watch.” On Tuesday evening, information surfaced that Saban and Alabama were negotiating a huge contract extension, in the $7 million per year range.
According to ESPN’s Paul Finebaum, Saban has had a contract extension in his hands for nearly a week. The exact dollar amount and years are not yet known.
Alabama coach Nick Saban has had a contract extension on his desk since Friday, and the longer it goes unsigned, the more uncomfortable Alabama officials grow, sources said.
Saban’s current deal with Alabama is worth $5.62 million per year and runs through Jan. 31, 2020.
The popular consensus is that if Mack Brown does indeed resign, Texas will open the bank vault for Saban. Numbers have even been thrown around that he could receive in the $10 million per year range, as well as stake in the Longhorn Network. While those figures are unconfirmed, it gives you an idea of what Alabama is facing.
Finebaum and Saban both use Jimmy Sexton as an agent, which is an interesting thing to note regarding this piece of information.
