Things have gone from bad to worse for San Francisco 49ers linebacker, Aldon Smith. According to Sports Illustrated, the Santa Clara District Attorney has filed three felony assault weapons charges against Smith.
The charges stem from a 2012 party in which Smith was stabbed and two other people were shot. Smith and Tennessee Titans tight end Delanie Walker reportedly attempted to break up the party by firing guns into the air. The guns were illegally obtained by Smith and Walker, and set off a firefight with a group in the street.
The 49ers organization had very little to say about their troubled star’s newest legal troubles.
“The 49ers organization is aware of the recent developments with Aldon arising from an incident at his home in 2012. We recognize the serious nature of this situation, as does Aldon, and will continue to monitor it closely. As this is an ongoing legal matter, we will have no further comment.”
Jim Harbaugh was similarly mum when asked about Smith.
“My comment would be, we’ve been aware of the incident that you’re referring to, the serious nature of it. And we’re all accountable for our actions good and bad. So, there’s a process, due process, other processes that will take place and I don’t feel any need to comment further on it.”
Aldon Smith is currently on leave from the team, seeking treatment for his alcohol and drug abuse. His September 20 resulted in a 2nd DUI for the third-year Pro Bowler.
