Tragedy struck Arkansas State on Thursday when it was confirmed that junior defensive lineman Markel Owens was killed in a shooting. Jordan Buie of The Jackson Sun reports that Owens and 36-year-old Johnny Shivers lost their lives in Jackson, TN at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday night. Owens’ mother, who was reportedly married to Shivers, was also shot, but received treatment and was released from the hospital.
Arkansas State’s sports information director, Jerry Scott, stated that “it’s a sad day.”
Owens was attempting to help fight off two robbers who entered the house when Shivers returned from work. The two men made away with cash, but not before shooting the three individuals inside the home.
The following according to Buie:
Investigators believe Shivers was specifically targeted. Police also found a large amount of marijuana inside the apartment. While the motive remains under investigation, police believe the robbers had prior knowledge of the drugs and/or cash inside the apartment.
As of writing, no arrests had been made in connection to the murder.
Markel helped lead Arkansas State to its second straight GoDaddy.com Bowl victory, and would have been entering his senior season this year.
