Former Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden received tragic news the day after Christmas. His grandson, Taylor Jeffrey Bowden, was killed in a car crash near Winter Haven, FL, according to a report from The Associated Press.
Bowden, 23, was riding with Rafael Fernandes De Aguiar Valim, 25, when De Aguiar Valim lost control of the car, crashing upside down into a ditch on the side of the road. Both Bowden and De Aguiar Valim were found dead on the scene. A third passenger, Robert Lewis Edwards, 22, was pulled from the submerged Mitsubishi after hours of being trapped.
The vehicle was spotted at approximately 7:47 a.m. Thursday morning by a Florida Refuse truck. It took more than three hours for rescue divers to locate Edwards and the bodies of Bowden and De Aguiar Valim.
Edwards was still in a state of shock upon questioning. Early reports are that alcohol was a factor in the wreck.
Bowden’s grandson’s death comes nearly 10 years after he tragically lost another grandchild, Bowden Madden, 15, and former son-in-law, John Allen Madden, in a car crash.
*UPDATE* Taylor Jeffery Bowden was the son of Jeff Bowden, currently an assistant coach for the Akron Zips. Jeff was on FSU’s coaching staff from 1994-2006.
Our thoughts are with @ZipsFB asst coach Jeff Bowden and family following the passing of his son T.J., today.
