California Chrome’s Nasal Strips Could Keep Him Out Of Belmont Stakes

California Chrome took the first two legs of horse racing’s Triple Clown and is poised to make a run for history at the Belmont Stakes. A New York rule, however, may keep him from racing in the third leg.

According to CNN, horses are not allowed to wear nasal strips, which California Chrome has worn for six straight races, in New York.

“The horse has been on a six-race winning streak with nasal strips. I don’t know why they would ban you from wearing one, but we’ll have to cross that bridge when we get there, I guess,” stated trainer Art Sherman.

Sherman added that “He (co-owner Perry Martin) might not run if they say you can’t run with a nasal strip. He’s very funny about things like that.”

California Chrome’s team can request the state’s racing association to wave the rule for the horse. As of writing there had not been any requests made regarding nasal strips.
