Chip Kelly may just be heading from the most fashionable football program in the country to a team that trots out onto the field in bright orange helmets and has no mascot or logo to speak of.
According to ESPN, Cleveland Browns CEO Joe Banner is not only in Arizona, where Kelly’s Oregon Ducks are preparing to take on Kansas State in the Fiesta Bowl, but Banner will not be waiting long at all before interviewing the highly sought after coach.
The Fiesta Bowl is scheduled for Thursday night. Banner’s interview with Kelly is on Friday.
Rumors have been running rampant since well before owner Jimmy Haslam went ahead and fired both coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert. Now that both are gone, Haslam and Banner are free to roam the collegiate ranks for their next head man.
Before word was confirmed that Kelly would be interviewing, Haslam was reportedly set to offer Alabama head coach Nick Saban a 10-year, $100 million offer to lead the Browns.
With Saban putting rumors to bed by stating that he would be staying in Tuscaloosa, the eye of the sports media world has set its sights upon Kelly. However, Kelly once again deflected any and all questions regarding the future, preferring to keep his focus on the Wildcats.
“I don’t expect anything,” he said. “I said this a million times. I’m never surprised by anything. I do not know what the future holds. I do know we have a football game tomorrow night and I’m going to be there.”
Yes, Kelly will be there, and he will be sporting the same green and black gear the nation has grown so accustomed to seeing him wearing.
Until he states unequivocally that he is either staying or leaving however, the question will remain: Will Kelly be there next season?
