Reports out of Cleveland are that Mike Brown and the Cleveland Cavaliers have reportedly reached a “handshake agreement.” There are still details to be ironed out, but there is agreement on both sides and an official announcement is expected as early as Wednesday. The hiring would bring Brown back to Cleveland after he was fired by Cavaliers ownership following the 2010 season.

If they can agree to a contract, Brown will return to the job the Cavs fired him from in 2010 after back-to-back 60-win seasons. He was the Cavs’ top choice for the job and the only person they interviewed, though they did reach out to gauge Phil Jackson’s possible interest.

The Cavs are expected to offer him a long-term contract that will give him security as he will try to lead them back to the playoffs after three straight seasons in the lottery. Brown led the Cavs to five consecutive playoff appearances from 2005-11.

Jason Lloyd of the Akron Beacon-Journal initially broke the story. Over the weekend, Brown met with Cavs owner Dan Gilbert and general manager Chris Grant in Detroit. There has been a mutual interest in bringing Brown back to Cleveland.

The former Cavs head coach moved back to Cleveland after he was fired from his head coaching gig with the Lakers following a 1-5 start. It was an acrimonious firing, and Brown remained one of the most highly respected and most sought-after coaches this year.

He had reportedly turned down the Phoenix Suns job and is excited to work with Cavs point guard Kyrie Irving.

Brown did work wonders with a Cavs team that featured LeBron James and a bunch of warm bodies. Could he do the same with another budding superstar?
