2012 Wisconsin Badgers Football Preview – Special Teams

[ezjw url="" ]

After a season that saw the Badgers commit far too many special teams breakdowns leading to game changing plays, especially in big games, Wisconsin will have to replace both their punter and kicker, Brad Nortman and Philip Welch, respectfully. The two former Badgers set plenty of records together during their time kicking in Camp Randall.

Kyle French has shown some promise at kicker and the punting situation will have to play out in the months leading up to this season.

Kickoff coverage has exposed the Badgers of late and with six new assistant coaches, one will hope the Badgers can put enough heads together to sure up their coverage.

Conversely, the return game is dynamic with Jared Abbrederis back deep, who is always a threat to take it to the house. More than ever, with expected offensive reliance on Abbrederis this season, it will be worth considering whether new special teams coordinator DeMontie Cross will use other options in the return game to avoid overworking Abbrederis.
