After a long and heated battle between freshman quarterbacks Treon Harris and Will Grier, the Florida Gators have elected to go with Harris as the backup QB for the opening game against Idaho. Will Muschamp announced the decision during his Tuesday press conference.
According to Muschamp, the competition between the two was essentially even, but the staff likes what Harris has to offer when it comes to short yardage situations and the ability to take pressure off of starter Jeff Driskel.
As for Grier, that doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t see the field this season. Muschamp stated that there’s no plan as of now to redshirt Grier. It’ll be a week-to-week competition between the two, meaning Grier could very well play his way into the backup quarterback role as the season progresses.
Skyler Mornhinweg is also in the mix, however Harris and Grier appear to be the two vying for the second-string role.
Florida kicks off the season on Saturday, August 30 at 7:00 p.m. ET in Gainesville.
