Devastating news struck the University of Miami on Wednesday when walk-on football player Joey Grosso died lobster diving. The news came one day after the former Penn linebacker was officially selected to join the Hurricanes.
Grosso was scuba diving off of Pompano Beach on the opening day of Florida’s lobster mini season – a two day event that allows divers a chance to catch lobster before commercial fisherman put their traps in the water. He ran out of air, was found floating unconscious at approximately 8:30 a.m., and pronounced dead upon arrival at an area hospital, according to a report from the Miami Herald.
“This has been the most tragic 24 hours that anyone in our family has ever experienced,” stated Grosso’s cousin Michael Becker. “He was a diehard UM fan — our whole family is. He didn’t even care about playing; he just wanted to say he was a Miami Hurricane. It meant the world to him.”
Grosso was just 22 years old at the time of his death.
