Once upon a time, players held press conferences to announce retirement. With the rise of social media, however, they are now finding alternative routes. On Wednesday, New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter posted a message to Facebook announcing the end of his career following the 2014 season.
Following is Jeter’s post. If it’s difficult to read, visit his Facebook page here.
A sure-fire first ballot Hall of Famer, Jeter will have spent 20 seasons in pinstripes. Entering the 2014 season, he has compiled a lifetime batting average of .312, 3,316 hits, 1,876 runs, 348 stolen bases, 256 home runs, and 1,261 runs batted in.
The New Jersey native, who turns 40 in June, will leave a legacy behind that rivals some of the greatest to ever take the baseball diamond.
