Ernest Suttles was supposed to be one of the best incoming freshmen in the Big Ten in 2013. After choosing Nebraska over West Virginia, Tennessee and several others, the Florida native reportedly was going to have the chance to play immediately for a team expected to compete for a conference title.

Instead, he has been sent packing before ever even playing a down for the Huskers. According to the Associated Press, coach Bo Pelini has kicked Suttles off the team after the defensive end smashed a bottle over teammate David Santos’ head at a party.

The university’s athletic department said in a statement it was “aware of an incident involving student-athletes which occurred off campus over the weekend.” The athletic department said it was working with the university’s Dean of Students to gather details.

Pelini himself did not release a statement along with the athletic department.

Reports said the party took place on June 21. Lincoln Police Capt. Danny Reitan reported that it was not immediately known whether Santos, a linebacker, has required medical attention after being hit with the bottle.

Where does Bo Pelini rank among all 125 FBS coaches?
