ESPN gives Digger Phelps a cake to commemorate anniversary of UCLA win

, , , ,

On Saturday, ESPN gave Digger Phelps a cake to commemorate, arguably, the biggest win in the former coach’s career: a 71-70 victory over the UCLA Bruins.

Heading into the game on January 19, 1974, John Wooden’s Bruins, led by the great Bill Walton, had won 88 consecutive games. They would not see number 89, as Phelps’ No. 2 ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish would upend the juggernauts and claim top spot in the land.

In honor of the game’s 40th anniversary, Notre Dame is inducting Phelps into the school’s Ring of Honor.
