We all knew it was only a matter of time until ESPN issued this apology.

Brent Musberger, who announced the 2013 BCS National Championship game alongside Kirk Herbstreit, took more than enough time to openly admire Katherine Webb on national television.

Webb, who is an Auburn grad and Miss Alabama, is the girlfriend of Alabama QB AJ McCarron.

Following is the apology from ESPN (via Mike Soltys, @espnmikes):

We always try to capture interesting storylines and the relationship between an Auburn grad who is Miss Alabama and the current Alabama quarterback certainly met that test. However, we apologize that the commentary in this instance went too far and Brent understands that.

Webb commented on Musberger’s statements (via al.com):

“He was complimentary, not creepy,” Webb said. “I think it’s unfair that people are giving him a hard time.”
